Our service is tailored so that we can effectively work directly for the owner, developer, architect or contractor. We can write documents for different procurement routes from output specifications on PPP’s, outline design briefs, Principals Project Requirements for D&C contracts and traditional materials and workmanship specifications.
Our service principally commences during design development, continuing through the construction documents phase, and offers support in the post-contract phase. We do not believe that the specification (the pile of paper), is the service; rather, the specification is the result of our consultancy. We therefore work closely with the designer to truly understand the building, then evolve and deliver specifications that reflect that understanding.
The core of our approach is a system we have developed over the years, in which technical references (T-Sheets) are developed to index the structures and assemblies that make up the building to produce a common project library of codes. These codes are then expanded into outline specifications during design development; the T-Sheets carry forward into the structure of the full specifications for the contract documents. Clients are encouraged to use the technical references instead of notes on the drawings, thus creating a project-wide vocabulary for discussing and developing the project documents.
The method described is not written in stone. Our process is adaptable to the requirements of the client and the complexity of the project. Ultimately, our aim, and the core of our service, is to articulate the design in the best way possible.
