Oxford project wins NHS Estates 'Building Better Healthcare award'

December, 2004

The John Radcliffe Emergency Department - for which Davis Langdon's Oxford office acted as Project Manager  - has won 'The Best Hospital Design Award 2004' at the NHS Estates' Building Better Healthcare Awards.

Designed by YRM architects, the project - which is the largest A&E refurbishment in the country - involved extending and remodelling the John Radcliffe Hospital Critical Care Unit, which includes the Emergency Department and a separate Paediatric Emergency Department, together with teaching laboratories and office accommodation, all within a high quality, natural lit environment.

The challenge was to provide an extension to the existing building over the original ambulance deck, and to tackle the complex phasing of the redevelopment whilst maintaining full day-to-day operations.

Davis Langdon’s Oxford office project managed the facility and the Trust’s commissioning of the facility after practical completion. Prior to this, it provided strategic cost advice for the Business Case phase of the project.

A further Oxford office project - University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust (Laing O'Rourke and Nightingale Associates) - was also shortlisted within the ProCure 21 Award category.
