The Swansea Leisure Centre, which was project managed by the Cardiff office of leading project and cost consultant Davis Langdon, was officially opened earlier this month  by HRH The Queen and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh on 7 March 2008.

The multi-functional leisure centre, now re-branded as “The LC”, has been transformed into a state of the art water park, creating a vibrant, modern facility with the latest technology and cutting edge attractions, including:

  • An indoor water park consisting of a network of pools, water rides and slides, including a Master Blaster and the Surf Rider, the world’s first indoor deep water surfing ride.
  • A lazy river to enable children to bodysurf, an interactive pool with play equipment, a toddler teaching facility in the Lagoon Pool and baby classes in the Kid’s Pool.
  • A multi-purpose sports and exhibition hall for sports, conferences, exhibitions and concerts.
  • Wales’ biggest fitness arena offering up to 180 stations with a comprehensive range of cutting-edge equipment and monitoring systems, weights and free-motion machines.
  • Two aerobic studios.
  • A spa with sauna, steam room, aromatherapy room, spa pool and specialist treatment rooms offering health and beauty treatments.
  • Three restaurants.
  • A four-storey children’s Playzone incorporating interactive audio visual elements using projectors, latest computer hardware and bespoke software packages, together with a sensory room for children with special needs – another world first.
  • Party and function room.
  • A nine-meter high climbing wall.

The facility is run by Bay Leisure Ltd – a not for profit Trust – and is expected to attract up to one million visitors a year!

Davis Langdon provided a range of services to the City and County of Swansea, including Procurement Management, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, CM Coordinator Services and Facilities Management.  The firm worked as part of a team including Powell Dobson Architects, engineers Ove Arup & Partners, Hoare Lea who provided M&E services; and contractors Andrew Scott and Laing O’Rourke.

Phil Davies, CCS Strategic Project Manager said, "The Davis Langdon team played a pivotal role in ensuring that this project was not only delivered on time and to budget but also in setting what I believe is a new benchmark for quality and innovation for public funded Leisure centres in the UK."

David Rossiter, Partner at Davis Langdon said, “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to deliver this fantastic public facility for one of our long standing clients, the City & County of Swansea. We have fostered a really positive team approach on this contract, which all consultants and contractors have bought into. It has been a very challenging but enjoyable process. “

He went on to say, “We are particularly pleased that the client had confidence in us from the outset and had the foresight to take a measured risk on the world's first deep water surf machine and what we believe to be the first children's play structure designed to incorporate elements of interactivity utilising the latest AV technology for children with special needs.

“We are very grateful for the support we have had from the client team, design team and contractors in helping to deliver this high quality and innovative project which, from the feedback and comments received to date from external parties, is considered to set the benchmark for the UK leisure industry.”

The LC Davis Langdon also helped deliver the adjacent National Waterfront Museum which opened in October 2005.  These two high quality buildings have enhanced the reputation and improved the facilities of Swansea.
