A landmark campus to attract elite researchers and staff.
Completed in January 2003.

The aim of the project was to draw together the departments of the Faculty of Mathematics, the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical physics.

These departments were to be accommodated within several ‘pavilions’ situated in a radial fashion around a grass-roofed central core building.

The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is a unique response to drawing together a number of eminent departments within the university, in a manner that would ensure a landmark campus to attract elite researchers and staff.

The architect was tasked with balancing the need to provide discreet clusters of workspace for each department, with the need to encourage the inter-departmental cross-fertilisation of ideas from time to time.  Hence the concept of radial pavilions linked by a central core building.

The resultant scheme comprises a ‘double pavilion’ flanking the front of the site, with six smaller pavilions splaying outwards around the grass-roofed central core.

The central core building houses 4 state of the art lecture theatres in the basement together with attractive meeting areas and restaurant above.  The pavilion buildings provide a diverse combination of research offices, seminar facilities and laboratories.

Davis Langdon were appointed to provide a total Project Management service from managing the procurement process to occupation by the Client and beyond.  Specific duties included client representation, overall cost control, risk and value management, management of the project team, procurement advice and the contract administration role.
