Hanover Hackney was set up as a subsidiary of the Hanover Housing Group following the transfer of nearly 1,000 homes from the local authority.

The Associations’ primary mission was to ensure the older people of the Borough of Hackney gain access to appropriate affordable housing.

In conjunction with Hanover in Hackney, Davis Langdon undertook a detailed investigation and analysis of the refurbishment works and recommended the NEC Term Service Contract to the client. Hanover in Hackney became one of the first organisations in the country to utilise this contract.

In assessing some of the sheltered housing blocks for refurbishments and development, it was found that the entrances were difficult to find and unsafe. Many of the communal areas made the residents feel ‘penned’ in and the facilities and residents lounge were not being utilised.

Residents have been consulted at all stages of the refurbishment projects through a variety of medium including letters, newsletters and scheme meetings.

The assessment of some of the sheltered housing blocks resulted in the project team creating an alternative entrance that was easier to find and the residents lounge was linked to the main entrance and gardens to promote  interaction. Extensions were  planned utilising a prefabricated technique for added lightweight flats on underused roof and terrace areas. The end result is a better looking property with enhanced facilities that residents felt happy to live in.

Consultation with residents formed an integral part of the decision making process and any opposition was dealt with in a sensitive and supportive manner, with the aims of the project communicated clearly and concisely to residents. Through embracing the community, the project reflected their aspirations for the long term.
