The department of plant sciences is the leading UK university department dedicated to research and teaching in plant, fungal and microbial sciences.

The headquarters for the department are located in the Centre of Cambridge, within an area also accommodating the departments of Biochemistry, Genetics and Zoology.

Plant Sciences moved to the site in 1904 to the building which it still occupies.  The building was extended in the 1930s and there have been numerous alterations and additions since.

Given the long successful history of the department and the continual need for expansion, it was determined in 2004 that the next phase of development would need to be more significant.  Due to the advancements in technology and the pressure to remain at the forefront of research in its field, further expansion of the existing site was not viable.  As a result, a new site was identified adjacent to the Cambridge Botanical Gardens, off Bateman Street outside the city centre.

The primary function of the Plant Growth Facility is to provide environmentally controlled plant growth facilities in which healthy and pathogen-infected plants can be separately grown in self contained areas with appropriate levels of containment.  In order to protect this research, there was a need to incorporate back-up facilities into the M&E design.

The Plant Growth Facility was completed in August 2005.

Davis Langdon were appointed to provide a total Project Management service from managing the second stage of the procurement process to occupation by the client and beyond.  Specific duties included client representation, risk and value management, management of the project team, procurement advice, quality monitoring and contract administration role.
