Please join us in congratulating our 3 scholarship recipients for the 2007-2008 Academic Year and wishing them well in their educational pursuits!
Southern California Region: Kevin Heinichen is a junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo pursuing a BS in Construction Management.
The eldest of three children, Kevin was the man of the house taking care of his younger siblings for his single mother. During high school he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts and participated in a community service project at a low income elementary school rebuilding their garden. While continuing to support his mother at home, Kevin minimized family expenses by commencing his studies at Santa Rosa junior college as a student of architecture and team captain of the water polo team. Kevin's "ultimate goal is to start a design-build construction company specializing in sustainable construction and developments.”
Pacific Northwest Region: Paul Strauser is a junior at Oregon State University pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering.
Throughout his second year of college, Paul battled extensive medical issues including recovery from surgery all the while continuing to maintain a 3.48 grade point average. Through internships, he's experienced and enjoyed the opportunity to improve the community in which he lives and considers civil engineering a pathway "to turn that joy into a career.”
Pennsylvania Region: Andrew Hale is a senior at Drexel University pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering.
After entering college and studying for two years Andrew realized he had yet to determine which career path to pursue. He took time away from school to travel, work, and independently research careers that could assimilate his interests. Upon returning to school at age 27, Andrew found funding his education and supporting himself to be a challenging experience. While attending college full-time he continues to intern with Davis Langdon in Philadelphia and to work weekends as a handyman to fund his studies. Upon graduation, he intends to find an "opportunity in a sustainable design or consulting firm with a primary focus on building energy efficiency" as he feels the "growing social and environmental conscience will continue to have a large impact on the building industry.”
