The six story facility is sited on a steep slope in the hills of Berkeley, California. The building is mainly designed for materials science laboratories (both wet and dry research labs), and includes high performance clean rooms, conference space, and offices. The nanotechnology labs required special vibration control features built into the structure.

The building was designed to maximize space in the limited site area, as well as work with the steep slope of the site (for example, entrance to the building is on the fourth floor; the remainder of the building extends down the slope). Sustainable design was a criterion, and the facility has earned LEED Gold certification.
