Davis Langdon, an AECOM company, advises the UK government

July, 2012

Davis Langdon, an AECOM company, has joined other business leaders in advising the UK government on how it can protect and grow the professional services industry against the increasing competition from the Far East.

Three case studies provided by AECOM and Davis Langdon, an AECOM company, were included in a report published by the independent professional business services group of the UK Government Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).  The Seizing the Opportunities for Growth report was highlighted in The Times newspaper and features a number of case studies including AECOM/Davis Langdon’s King’s Cross Central, the Shard and the Olympic Park.

The case studies were used to reinforce the main message of the report around the basis for growth and innovation for UK based professional services firms, which are a major industry.  Currently contributing 20% of UK plc GVA, the sector is more significant than manufacturing.
The report outlines how government can help, from incentivising banks to lend to small and medium-sized businesses, and encouraging investment in infrastructure, to more apprenticeship and graduate schemes. The chosen projects show how the sustainability agenda can be advanced through pumping investment into deprived areas and creating training opportunities and new jobs.

John Hicks, Head for Government and Public projects for Davis Langdon, sits with other industry leaders on the BIS Group and points out that economies are being driven by the challenges of an ageing population and high density living; concerns about security; access to energy; and the rising economic capability of the developing world. “The UK’s competitive advantage lies in its ability to provide solutions to these challenges, which can be traded worldwide”.
